We had great fun yesterday at the inaugural Marble Hill Fun Run in aid of Cancer Research UK. We took over 200 adults and 50 children through a warm up before their 6k and 1k runs respectively. We certainly ensured the runners enjoyed their dynamic warm – up even encouraging the Mayor of Twickenham to join us on stage!

The event was organised by a team of local volunteers and they put on a great family day including an afternoon of entertainment including a number of live bands, children’s magician, a raffle and a number of stalls selling local produce.
It was inspiring, as always, to see so many runners of such a variety of ages, running experiences and athletics abilities doing their best and raising money for a charity close to many of our hearts. I’m pleased to report that Elvis just beat the Gingerbread man in a sprint finish!

Be sure to join us next year!

We really enjoyed this local race last year and it formed part of one our long training runs in preparation for the 2009 Amsterdam Marathon. It’s a local, old school race, organised by a local cricket club, with good organisation, medals for all finishers, plenty of marshalls and a very reasonable entry fee of either £10 in advance or £12 on the day.
The event starts in Thames Ditton and goes down toward Kingston Upon Thames and then along the towpath to Hampton Court and then back along to Thames Ditton.
This year the event takes place on Sunday 12 September 2010 at 10 am on Giggs Hill Green, Thames Ditton, Surrey, UK, home of the organisers, Thames Ditton Cricket Club. You can enter online here or on the day itself from 8:00am.

“Insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” So said Albert Einstein some time ago and me on a regular basis when new clients tell me their current running schedule. Find out why varying your training pace is important with this article form our Run Training team that looks at the difference between aerobic and anaerobic training.

A highlight of my running year is the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon which takes place each February in Brighton, even last year when the bitterest of winds combined with the heaviest ice cold rain imaginable to make it not so nice to be beside the seaside. At the time I said never again, but as a frustrating summer season comes to an end I’ll be doing all I can to get fit for February when the 2011 Sussex Beacon Half marathon will take place.
Despite the teething problems at the finish line caused by the horrendous weather last year the events remains one of the best organised and fun to run half marathons in the UK and becomes more popular with each passing year so be sure to register as soon as you can when entries open in September. For full details visit the official website.

There have been a 2 high profile incidents today of a woman at a drive through and an air steward in the USA emulating Michael Douglas in the film “Falling Down” where modern life becomes too much and meltdown ensues.
Whilst extreme examples of expressions of anger there is no doubt that we are under stress and pressure from our work and life environments that we haven’t evolved to cope with. Long working hours often sat at a desk, over reliance on new technology, traffic and long commutes, addiction to alcohol and other stimulants, a lack of sleep and rest, absence of green spaces and an isolation and disconnection from friends and family are commonplace in the modern western world. Failure to readdress these imbalances can lead to a build up of stress and depression and result in outpourings of aggression and violence.
Health experts across the world agree that taking regular exercise can reduce stress levels, particularly running. We have used running to help ourselves and our clients increase confidence, improve mental and physical wellbeing, reconnect with our self, elevate mood and increase energy levels.
Check out our training section or drop us a line if you have any questions or how to start or how to improve your running fitness. For more details on reducing stress, read this informative article on the BBC website.

The Cancer Research 2010 Run 10k series was launched in London yesterday with the opening of the worlds first urban running lane along the South Bank in London. The lane was opened for one day only to promote the 8th year of the Cancer Research 10k series.
This year the Run 10k series will bring together 50,000 men and women to raise £5 million to help fund Cancer Research’s vital research. Races will take place across the UK throughout September and October.
A 10k is a great race distance for runners of all abilities, with those new to running able to test themselves and improve their fitness by training to run further than before and for the more experienced runners a chance to improve running speed and economy.
Registration is now open and can be done online at the Run 10k website. There are also inspirational videos and training guides on the site.

When I first started running the Bushy Park 5K Run was an inspirational event that enabled me to run for free with other runners and gave me the support and confidence to run further distances. The event has always been impeccably organised with runners getting their time, position and rankings emailed to them on the same day and with all results available in an easy to search form on the website. There were on average 50 runners when I first ran and now the Bushy Park event regularly attracts several hundred runners and in addition there are now Park Run events up and down the country. So after only 5 years, the Park Run team are well on their way to meeting the target of having a free event in every community that wants one.
Visit the ParkRun website if you haven’t run before to register before the day of the event to ensure your free participation or if there isn’t a Park Run in your community visit the site to find out how you can set up an event in your town.

Brendan Foster, the founder of the Great North Run, today confirmed that Haile Gebrselassie, universally recognised as the worlds greatest-ever distance runner, will compete at the 30th staging of the Bupa Great North Run on September 19th, a decade after injury originally ruled him out.
The 37-year-old former world half marathon champion and record holder with a fastest time of 58min 55sec will be using the race as part of his preparation for his debut at the 2010 ING New York City Marathon in November.
The event is now 10 weeks away so for those runners who can currently run up to a 10K there is still time to train in a structured fashion to arrive fit to run a half marathon on Spetember 19th in Newcastle. A number of charities have places available and details can be found at the BUPA Great North Run website.

10th October 2010 will see the 2nd running of the Pulse 3K run for children aged between 11 and 16. The event takes place alongside the incredibly popular Royal Parks Half Marathon which sold out in record time this year.
The Pulse 3k takes place through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, taking in the last 3km of the Half Marathon course and finishing under the main gantry to the cheers of the crowds.
Running is at the heart of so many sports – from football and tennis to boxing and fencing – so the organiser are encouraging as many young people as possible to “Get Fit for Your Sport”. Running is also one of the cheapest sports to get involved in.
For the runners, the warm up will take place in front of the main stage and the start of the race will be shortly after the gun for the Half Marathon, meaning that everyone benefits from the “big event” atmosphere within the Festival site.
For the parents, we’ve created a new, circular route which enables supporters to cheer the runners on at the start – AND make it to the finish line before them!
Entry is just £7 per place – and all runners will receive a medal and event T-Shirt. Places can be booked online at the official race website.

The Amsterdam marathon is one of our favourite races. It takes place each October in a fascinating city that is easily accessible from the UK. The race itself starts and finishes in the stadium used for the 1928 Olympics providing an incredible atmosphere at the start and finish of the race with the stands packed with spectators of all nationalities supporting around 10,000 runners from overseas.
Flights are still pretty cheap at this stage from a number of carriers and accommodation in Amsterdam is in plentiful supply.
In addition to the marathon race there are half marathon and 8k races on the same day. The events take place on Sunday October 17th 2010. Race places for all events are available on a first come first served basis from the Amsterdam marathon website.
Over 11,000 people have already registered for these fast, flat races which are always enthusiastically supported.

Congratulations to our team who took part in the Nokia Windsor Triathlon at the weekend. The team was lead by Veronica Banks who we have trained for the last 3 years developing her running from being able to run for a mile up to half marathon distance and next year the Brighton Marathon!
This year was her debut at the Windsor Triathlon having vowed never to swim in the Thames! Veronica conquered the Thames exiting the water in 6th place and enjoyed the rolling ride before encountering the infamous run climb along Windsor Castle, but as the photo shows stayed relaxed to finish the event strongly.
The Nokia Windsor Triathlon event is a landmark event in the UK Triathlon season and entries always sell out months in advance. Sign up for news from organisers Human Race to ensure you book your place for next year at the 2 available race distances.

People take up running for different reasons but once we’ve started most of us want to know if we’re improving and if so by how much. So quickly, measuring and analysing our training runs and races becomes a key component of improving running fitness. The most accurate and user friendly method is a GPS watch but up until now price has been a barrier to purchase. That is until next month when Garmin launch an entry version of their Forerunner range that accurately measures your time, distance and Heart Rate.
The new Garmin Forerunner 110 is a GPS Enabled sports watch designed for runners that will accurately track your time, pace and distance covered. It’s available in 3 colour ways, Black / Red, Grey or Grey / Pink.
Enhancements on previous models include plug and play functionality that makes the watch simple to use with no setup required, the GPS receiver operates with HotFix to speed up the time taken to find and hold a signal and battery time has been increased to 7 hours of battery life when training and 2 weeks of normal use. An added benefit is that the watch is water resistant up to 1 metre with no loss of GPS signal making it the perfect training partner for running and triathlon.
We’re sure the product will be in high demand, it is currently available for pre-order from our retail partner Lanson Running. So be sure to guarantee yourself what will be an in demand product when it is launched at the end of April. The Garmin Forerunner 110 will cost £149.99 without the Heart Rate monitor and £169.99 for the version bundled with a Heart Rate Monitor.

Before I 'found' running. Fitness and Personal Training my career change was going to be as a photographer. So having run numerous running events and having started this website I've always been frustrated with the poor quality and high price of photos provided by the 'official' race photographers.
That is until Sunday when I came across a great site, run by photographers who take inventive, quality shots of runners at events across the country and then make them available for you to use for FREE! The company are called 42run.com and their pictures can be found at the official 42run.com website or on the photo sharing site Flickr. You can search for your pictures from an event by entering your race number.
We’re sure this site is going to grow and grow in size and popularity!

The Sussex Beacon Brighton Half Marathon is my favourite race of the year. Well, it was! It was my 5th running of the event and this time a number of clients joined us to run the event.
I’ve been convincing Veronica that the biblical weather forecast she’d been monitoring for the last month would definitely prove to be wrong and that a nice day by the seaside would be had by all. I was wrong!
The 6,200 runners, thousands of spectators and fantastic army of volunteers were left battered and frozen by the incessant heavy rain and icy wind that buffeted the runners for most of the run along the Brighton seafront.
Despite the tough conditions all of the GoOutRun.com running team posted good times, with 3 runners nailing a PB through the wind and the rain!
Once again in the most testing conditions the event was superbly organised, attended and supported. A special mention must go to Captain America who was with me stride for stride and must have weighed about 2 stone heavier by the end!
Well done team and look forward to a sunnier day by the seaside next year!

The party (and hopefully snow) season is now behind us and we can focus fully on the big challenge you have set yourself in 2010, the Virgin London Marathon!
Training for the marathon will take up an increasing amount of your thoughts, time and life over the coming months leading up to what will prove to be an unforgettable day. Your only objective over the coming weeks of running is to train yourself to be able to run 26.2 miles on Sunday 25th April. You will cover hundreds of miles over that period of time and place your mind and body through a heavy load. So, your training is simply there to prepare your body and mind to run an endurance event of in excess of 3 hours on that given day.
The key to this is to build a solid foundation. Start off slowly in terms of the pace and the amount of miles you run. January and February are important months in ensuring you have built a solid foundation so you don’t overstretch yourself come March and April.
You should aim to do the following over the next couple of months :

The 2009 London Running Show proved to be a great success for GoOutRun.com.
The first staging of the show attracted a high number of visitors across the Saturday and Sunday, who in spite of adverse weather and travel conditions, were keen to see seminars from the likes of Jo Pavey and Charlie Spedding and to see the latest products from companies such as Mizuno, Lucozade and Asics.
Across the weekend, attracting close to 1,000 visitors to the stand and around 100 visitors to our motivation, coaching and amazing events seminar.
It was great to speak to so many runners; key topics that kept cropping up across the weekend were injury prevention, how to structure training, training for marathons, strength and conditioning, nutrition and dynamic stretching. We will cover these topics in our Know How Guides section over the coming weeks.

A team of 7 runners from GoOutRun.com headed over to Amsterdam at the weekend to take part in the Full and Half Marathons. The first race of the weekend took place on Saturday morning to see if plane could beat car and ferry to the Dutch capital. The team on the Plane were the clear winners!
There was a mixture of experience amongst the group with 2 runners making their debut in the Half Marathon and 2 in the Full Marathon. There were certainly plenty of nerves and fears on the Saturday as we collected our race information from the Marathon Expo and whiled away the hours drinking coffee and water on the Saturday afternoon. Not your typical weekend in Amsterdam!
There were 26,000 runners taking place in the three running events that took place over the weekend with all events starting and finishing in the Olympic stadium, which provided a dramatic backdrop and atmosphere. The Amsterdam Marathon event, as always, was superbly organised and marshalled with great support from the locals and the many visiting supporters.
All runners exceeded their expectations, with 6 PBs and the nerves and fears of Saturday were replaced with smiles, laughter and beers on Sunday evening!
For those interested in taking part next year, be sure to check out the official Amsterdam Marathon website for entry details or visit our friends at the travel tour company Absolute Running who also had a strong team out in force at the event.
