Brendan Foster, the founder of the Great North Run, today confirmed that Haile Gebrselassie, universally recognised as the worlds greatest-ever distance runner, will compete at the 30th staging of the Bupa Great North Run on September 19th, a decade after injury originally ruled him out.
The 37-year-old former world half marathon champion and record holder with a fastest time of 58min 55sec will be using the race as part of his preparation for his debut at the 2010 ING New York City Marathon in November.
The event is now 10 weeks away so for those runners who can currently run up to a 10K there is still time to train in a structured fashion to arrive fit to run a half marathon on Spetember 19th in Newcastle. A number of charities have places available and details can be found at the BUPA Great North Run website.

10th October 2010 will see the 2nd running of the Pulse 3K run for children aged between 11 and 16. The event takes place alongside the incredibly popular Royal Parks Half Marathon which sold out in record time this year.
The Pulse 3k takes place through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, taking in the last 3km of the Half Marathon course and finishing under the main gantry to the cheers of the crowds.
Running is at the heart of so many sports – from football and tennis to boxing and fencing – so the organiser are encouraging as many young people as possible to “Get Fit for Your Sport”. Running is also one of the cheapest sports to get involved in.
For the runners, the warm up will take place in front of the main stage and the start of the race will be shortly after the gun for the Half Marathon, meaning that everyone benefits from the “big event” atmosphere within the Festival site.
For the parents, we’ve created a new, circular route which enables supporters to cheer the runners on at the start – AND make it to the finish line before them!
Entry is just £7 per place – and all runners will receive a medal and event T-Shirt. Places can be booked online at the official race website.

The Amsterdam marathon is one of our favourite races. It takes place each October in a fascinating city that is easily accessible from the UK. The race itself starts and finishes in the stadium used for the 1928 Olympics providing an incredible atmosphere at the start and finish of the race with the stands packed with spectators of all nationalities supporting around 10,000 runners from overseas.
Flights are still pretty cheap at this stage from a number of carriers and accommodation in Amsterdam is in plentiful supply.
In addition to the marathon race there are half marathon and 8k races on the same day. The events take place on Sunday October 17th 2010. Race places for all events are available on a first come first served basis from the Amsterdam marathon website.
Over 11,000 people have already registered for these fast, flat races which are always enthusiastically supported.
