Measuring the distance

It's human nature to want to know how far we have run so that we can monitor and track our progress. There are a number of ways in which we can measure a route that we have run. The simplest is to simply drive the route that you have run and measure that in your car.

The next step would be to use one of the great mapping tools that are available on the web. Our two favourites are www.mapmyrun.com and www.everytrail.com. Both of these services allow you to find your run distance by plotting your run on a map, you can also share routes with other runners and meet other runners in your area.

However, for those who want to truly track their every step a GPS watch provides the perfect partner. We have used Garmin's Forerunner series over the last few years and they have never let us down. The Forerunner measures your distance, speed, pace, time and heart rate. What's more you can download all of your data to your computer giving you a complete record of all your training. Check out the latest range at our retail partner www.lansonrunning.com

You are what you eat

As we discuss in the Nutrition section the fuel that we take in is a critical determiner of running performance. A great tool for tracking exactly what you are eating is a Food Diary. Quite often there's a big difference between what people think they eat and drink and the reality. Completing a Food Diary for a 1 or 2 week period gives you the perfect record of how you are fuelling yourself throughout the day and before and after exercise and enables you to refine your nutrition and hydration strategies.
